Being Known
Psalm 139:1
O LORD, you have searched me and known me.
Being Known
In our lives there are people who know us well. Some are friends and family from childhood, some are people who become family later, who pay such good attention to who we are that they make us feel truly seen, truly known. When we try to pretend that we are happy when we aren’t, they are the ones who can get us to tell the truth, to share what’s really happening on the inside. We are thankful for these people when they come along. They are the friends we aspire to be – people who can see other people with open, accepting, loving eyes.
God knows us, from the inside out. There are days when that might feel a little scary, when we imagine we don’t want everything to be known. There are some secrets that we try to keep even from ourselves. The witness of this Psalm is that God has searched the truth that we hold within us and sees us completely, knows us completely. There is nothing we can’t share with God in prayer – no walls we need to hide behind. We are free to be angry, excited, frustrated, guilty, joyful, confused, sad or hopeful. We are free to ask the questions we don’t ask out loud anywhere else in our lives.
We are seen and we are known. May that good news bring us a foundation of comfort and strength to stand on, as we walk in this world.
