Watching
Habakkuk 2:1a
I will stand at my watchpost
and station myself on the rampart;
I will keep watch to see what the Lord will say to me…
Watching
Some good friends of ours recently shared their home on a beautiful lake with us, when we needed to be up in their area. When I looked through the pictures of that time and saw the one at the top of the meditation – and then read this passage - it all came together in my mind. Sometimes, we need a place to stand and look farther than our television set, or our neighbor’s yard. We need a place to say yes to what is bigger in the world than we first imagined it to be.
The lake had come over its boundaries, the spring trees were in full flowering bloom, and a sense of overwhelming love in the world came through in the middle of an unexpected cold spell in May. I buried the lead there – the reality that God’s love and creativity is on display in the beauty of nature, speaking to us whether or not we choose to listen. When we stand in a watching place and pay attention, we might just hear a message that lifts us from whatever despair is threatening our spirit. We can find our way home to a love that transcends the worries of the day and surrounds us with joy and beauty and peace that passes understanding.
Reflection Questions:
1) Do you have a place you go that reminds you of the beauty of creation?
2) Imagine yourself in the place you thought of in question 1.
3) What message do you hear as you open yourself to dwell in that place in your imagination?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, Sometimes we really need to be shown that you are in this life with us. Help us to see the way your love surrounds us today. In Jesus Name, Amen
