Doing and Distractions
Luke 10:41 41 The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things…”
Doing and Distractions
If you know, you know. Martha is the sister who does the work and Mary - just sits and listens at Jesus feet. Martha wants Jesus to make her sister help and Jesus says no.
It is a story that irritates the behind scenes doers among us to no end. Somebody once told me if that was the scripture on Sunday, she’d go downstairs to work on coffee hour for the church, because she thought Jesus got it wrong.
I picked just this one verse today on purpose, because I think it puts the spotlight where Jesus wanted it to be. The issue is worry and distraction. The issue is missing the blessing of the moment we are in because we’ve allowed ourselves to choose to worry about some distraction instead. Jesus didn’t have an issue with doers. Lots of times he wanted people to do - to care for neighbors in need. Jesus had an issue with distraction robbing Martha of the moments that might have helped her live without so much worry. The moments with Jesus that could point her toward how to live life in this world standing on the foundation of his love - those were not to be missed.
So, what in our lives is faithful doing and what is a distraction? What about this day is the most important thing, that we do not want to miss?
Reflection Questions:
1) Think about yesterday. What was the most important moment in your day?
2) What will help you let go of distractions today?
3) What important activity would you like to do today?
Prayer: Dear God, I am so thankful for the invitation to pay attention to the important things. In Jesus Name, Amen
